Rev. John C. Blackford

Memorial Scholarship Application

In 1959 the Rev. John C. Blackford was transferred by the Methodist Church Annual Conference to Lindstrom, Minnesota, and served at First United Methodist Church for twenty-five years. In 1959, the Lindstrom church was a small white church on Highway 8 with the parsonage next door and also was a former Swedish Conference Methodist Church. Again, God blessed John’s ministry, and the church outgrew its building on Highway 8, and the wonderful and farsighted congregation embarked on a building plan. The new (current) Lindstrom Church was completed in 1968, and since that time this fine facility has been a blessing from God to the members of First United Methodist Church and the community it serves. Due to health issues, John left the Lindstrom Church in 1984, and retired from full-time ministry. John and Tulida left behind so many good friends in the congregation and the Chisago Lakes community at large. They remained close to many of their Lindstrom area friends over the years and felt so blessed to be part of that congregation for 25 years!

In a 1984 farewell letter to the Lindstrom Church, Pastor Blackford expressed his love of God and his call to the ministry in this way. “I have endeavored to have a balanced ministry, emphasizing all aspects of the Gospel. I have stressed evangelism in all my churches, holding evangelistic meetings, giving altar calls, and serving as a guest evangelist in a number of places. I have taken part in evangelistic meetings in churches of each District of the Minnesota Conference, and have had the joy of seeing many find Christ in a new relationship. My message has been built upon the foundation of the Scriptures and centered in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. I have sought the guidance of the Holy Spirit in my life and work.”

In honor of Pastor Blackford’s commitment to ministering in the Lindstrom area and beyond for so many years, the First UMC Foundation Board has scholarship opportunities in his name and memory, for students who are members, or related to members of First UMC in Lindstrom. Students must submit their completed annual application to the church office by June 1. A copy of their most recent high school or post-secondary transcript is required. Foundation Board members meet together to review and grade each application. A point system is used in grading. Board members do not know the name of the applicant until the recipients are chosen.
